{{diagram.diagramName}}

The distance between each of the notes in the scale. W = Whole Note which is two frets on the guitar. H = Half Note or one fret on the guitar. Sometimes referred to in terms of semitones. 1 Whole Note = 2 semitones. 1 Half Note = 1 semitone.

Scale Formula's are based on the formula of the Major Scale which is the most important scale in western music.

Any major scale is defined by the formula 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 where the numbers represent the intervals or distance between the notes. These intervals can also be referred to by name e.g. Root (1), Major Second (2), Major Third (3), Perfect Fourth (4), Perfect Fifth (5), Major Sixth (6) and Major Seventh (7).

As an example the scale formula of the Minor Pentatonic scale is 1 b3 4 5 and b7. This means that the minor pentatonic does not have the 2 and 6th notes from the major scale and it also has it's 3rd and 7th notes lowered by a semitone.
E.g. C Major Scale: C D E F G A B  Formula:1 2 3 4 5 6 7
C Minor Pentatonic: C Eb F G Bb  Formula:1 b3 4 5 and b7
